Verifiable credentials based on Self-Sovereign Identity
How can we ensure that our interactions in the digital world are safe and trustworthy? How can we prove our own identity, and any interconnected attributes, in a reliable and data-compliant way? A solution already exists: deploying digital certificates which are referred to as “Verifiable Credentials” based on Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI). SSI is essentially a user-centric technology, due to its easy handling and the ability of an individual to fully control and manage their own personal data.
We would like to explain the functionality and potential use cases for credentials by following our protagonist called Sam, who has just completed a Corona test.

1.A The test result is issued as a digital credential. Sam stores it in a Wallet App on his mobile device.
1.B All data which is needed to authenticate the credential is stored in a decentralized database.
2. Sam proves the validity of his test result via his credential. Sam’s Wallet App sends the required data to the restaurant’s Wallet App…
3. …which checks authenticity and validity by cross-checking the data on the decentralised database. Sam’s personal data (age, address…) will not be prompted.
4. The Wallet App confirms Sam’s test result.
As demonstrated in this example, digital credentials based on SSI are very easy to handle. You store them as a digital version of, e. g. your ID card, in a digital Wallet App on your mobile device.
All your documents are thus available any time and can be presented when needed. You do not have to use a specific Wallet App by a certain provider, every user makes his own choice.
Credentials based on SSI technology are also secure against manipulation: all data needed to verify the credential is being encrypted, stored in a decentralized way and cannot be deleted. (The energy-efficient Distributed Ledger Technology serves as the basis for decentral storage.)
The user has complete control over his personal data, which is stored only in the wallet on his mobile device. He decides with whom which data is shared, and he can monitor who gets access to it. This ensures compliance with the highest data protection regulations, such as those of the GDPR.

User authentication in an eco-system
A practical use case for credentials based on SSI-technology has reached production stage in Switzerland. esatus has implemented an efficient and future-proof identity and authentication process at Cardossier, a platform for vehicle documentation. In the future, users will be able to identify themselves much more easily with credentials and log in without a password. Find out more in our press release.
Access control at a large construction site
During a pilot phase of several months, digital credentials were used to efficiently control and document access to a large construction site, as well as checking of specific permissions. Considering the many companies involved (subcontractors, suppliers, specialist planners, architects and many more), the procedure ensures greater efficiency and smooth handling for construction site management.
Covid-19 immunity certificate based on detected antibodies
Whether at work, with friends or in public areas – it is helpful to know that my counterpart has formed antibodies. This proof is issued as a digital certificate, stored in the wallet app and presented as a QR code on request. The verifying party scans the QR code and immediately sees the result. esatus developed this prototype ready for production for the COVID-19 Credentials Initiative (CCI).
Log-on to Jira and Windows
Using the SeLF solution suite esatus employees have the option of logging on easily and without a password to internal company software and now also to Windows. This is enabled by SSI credentials – in a compliant and secure way. Log-on process for a software application (PoC within a corporate structure)
Digital credentials have successfully passed a test implementation at DB Systel GmbH. Without entering a password, employees can now access the group software by simply scanning a QR code with their mobile device, so that they are identified and authorized to access the system. SeLF could be integrated without the need for changes to the existing IT infrastructure. For more details read out our press release.
Rollout Day
A Great Success
esatus AG is continuously working on SSI technologies. The first product is SeLF, with which future-oriented SSI functionality can be brought into existing systems in the enterprise context. The Sovrin network is used as the underlying technology and necessary blockchain-based trust network. It combines global distribution (over 70 stewards worldwide) and completely transparent governance and thus has an exceptional position. As the next logical step, esatus AG has now also implemented its own product for the first time under real conditions – initially for all of its own employees with a selected IT system.
