Use Case Access Control

Intelligent, digital control of access rights, enabling fast, secure and flexible verification.

Use case access control

See how physical access to a building or place of work is controlled in an efficient way using esatus _SOWL technology based on Self Sovereign Identity (SSI).

Access control with _SOWL

Access control by means of digital credentials step by step

1. Identification

An employee presents his/her relevant paperwork (employee card, ID card, or other required documents) at the employer‘s office. To start the process, the employee is invited to download a wallet app on their smartphone.

2. Issuing of credential

The relevant data is entered in the esatus _SOWL backend by the employer, to issue the digital credential offer. Once done a QR code appears on the tablet. The employee scans the QR code with his/her smartphone to establish a digital connection, and then receives a message „Please accept new credential“. The digital credential can now be saved in their smartphone wallet.

3 Authenticity of Credential

Only those data needed to prove the authenticity and validity of the credential is stored on the decentralised database, e.g. information about the issuer of the credential. Any personal data of employees is only stored in their own smartphone wallet.

4. Arrival at the premises

If the employee wants to enter the building, nothing else is needed but his/her smartphone wallet.

5. Credential verification

With the wallet app he/she scans a QR code (e.g. on the security guard’s tablet). A prompt appears asking the employee to present a valid credential. The wallet app then sends a response with the relevant information. In the background, the esatus _SOWL software verifies this information, as well as the authenticity and validity of the credential by cross-checking with the decentralized database (credential verification).

6. Decision on access

After successful verification of the credential, the employee can enter the building. If the verification fails, access is denied. The verification process can also be run contactless via a tablet or a terminal displaying the QR code, without the physical presence of a security guard.

esatus _SOWL - optional functionalities:

  • Credentials in printed form enable access control without smartphone app
  • Credential can include photo to allow doublechecking of identity
  • In the case that there is no permanent internet availability, offline verification is possible

Benefits of Self-Sovereign Identity Technology:

As shown in this use case example, _SOWL allows to control access to buildings or protected areas based on an intelligent set of rules with pre-defined factors. Such a rule may be defined as “a person who works for one of my suppliers, and/or has already received the required site instructions”. These rules can be fully tailored to individual requirements, and allow to control people outside a specific company. Safety and regulatory inspections are facilitated and can be carried out any time. Administrative tasks are reduced to an absolute minimum.

Sample Use Case:
inGo – the digital universal key for the construction industry

Powered by esatus _SOWL technology, inGo ensures standardised and fast access for all persons working on a construction site. There is no need for lengthy checks of paper documents, by digitalizing and saving them on the wallet app. As a result,  inGo offers both workers and employers more protection against wage dumping, undeclared work and illegal employment.
