Field Report Dual Studies
Dual studies with focus on IT security – University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt
In cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt, esatus AG offers the dual course of studies Master of Science – Computer Science (6 semesters, 3 years) with the specialization IT Security. Anne and Jonas report on their experiences and show how they came to the course and what makes it special.
My motivation for studying dual (Jonas):
„My personal goal was to complete my academic career with a master’s degree. I was interested in IT Security for a long time, while the social and media interest in the topic grew. For this reason, I have decided to change from my previous Bachelor of Business Informatics and to gain a foothold in the Information Security sector. The dual degree program allows me to combine these two interests and to achieve my master’s degree, while at the same time, as a consultant, I can deal directly with the customer with current topics of IT Security.“
How I got my place of study (Anne):
„After my dual Bachelor in a big company, I realized that I would also like to make the Master dual. Because of my good experiences with Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, I did a research on which companies offer a dual Master. Through various courses in the Bachelor, my interest in IT Security grew, which is why I wanted to deepen my knowledge in this area. At the same time, I got a request from the HR department of esatus AG, who offered exactly what I had imagined. After two very pleasant and positive talks, it was clear that I would start the dual studies in cooperation with esatus AG and Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences.“
Course detail (Jonas):
„The standard period of study for this Master program is six semesters. This includes a practical semester and a semester for the Master thesis. Together with the full-time students, we visit the regular modules in the course of a semester. They are not mandatory and we can freely choose them from the current offer. On days in which we don’t have lectures, we go to work. Thus, on average, we achieve about 20 Credit Points per semester.
The third semester is reserved for the practice project. During this time, no courses are held at the university, instead we work full-time at esatus AG on site or directly at the customer’s premises. In addition, we write two elaborations on project-relevant topics.
In the semester vacations we can use the holiday entitlement. However, we both prefer to use this time to collect even more experiences.
We write the Master thesis in the company. esatus AG supports us here with a separate contact person and at the university we attend an accompanying seminar.“
Program contents (Anne):
„As already mentioned, there are no compulsory lectures in the dual master’s degree in computer science at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. It’s possible to select the content of studies according to your own interests. Only the in-depth study in IT Security requires that you take at least 24 CP from this area. For example, in ‘Computer Forensics’, you can gain an insight into the digital determination, including data carrier analysis, application forensics and RAM analysis, and apply this in ‘Advanced Topics in Computer Forensics’. In ‘Selected Topics of IT Security’ you can also deal with current problems.“
